Pentalver Video Shoot

It's really interesting to shoot around Southampton Docks - especially when you have the kind of access this client were able to grant us! One of the things I love about my job is getting to have a look at lots of different workplaces and this is one of the most impressive. Especially when it's no big deal to get really high up in a cherry picker so you can clamp your GoPro to the top of a stack of shipping containers. Was a bit cold up there though.

Equinox Gentleman's Barbers

Equinox

This was a great shoot for Equinox Gentleman's Grooming in Southampton. They've put a lot of thought and energy into redecorating the salon to give it a very vintage look and wanted to shoot some portraits of their website so we set this up which, considering every wall has a massive mirror on it, was actually quite a challenge so I'm very happy to say not a single piece of equipment is visible in any reflection

Shooting Ski Goggles

Ski Goggles Setup

These are hands down one of the most difficult things I have ever shot! They are basically curved mirrors that reflect EVERYTHING! They somehow manage to see the edge of the diffusion even when you think the goggles are completely surrounded by it.
I've finally developed a rig that is quick to put together and minimises retouching so I can get through these quite fast now and in a very repeatable way, so the goggles I shoot are all in a consistent light and angle even when photographed months apart which I feel is essential for a good looking e-commerce website.

Primer Design

This is a DNA detector and looks how I imagine a DNA detector would look in the movies. I suspect until this machine came along DNA detectors were probably a lot less cool looking so well done to Primer Design for bringing science fiction to life!

Went to a fantastic studio in Birmingham to shoot these machines - the studio was based around a large turntable with a white screen stretched around the back edge so the machine could be turned around to exactly the right angles and then lit through the screen. This allowed me to get some lovely reflections off the various panels of the machine and quickly get shots from the different angles the client needed. Would love to have a similar setup one day.

This was a lovely job - an engineering company near my old workplace asked me to shoot some images around their workshop for a day then shoot some creatives of the pieces they are making. The shoot around the workshop was absolutely fascinating - lots of very skilled engineers using high end CNC milling machines and equipment that I couldn't even begin to work out how to operate. Then back in the studio shooting the pieces I had seen being made gave me a lot of appreciation for the expertise and precision that had gone into their manufacture. One thing I really enjoy doing is creating interesting images of items that many people would normally disregard so these shots have become some of my favourites.

Mason Pearson Hairburshes

Mason Pearson Hairbrush

These hair brushes are kind of a big deal. And I had one of every size and type they make in the studio at the same time! Felt like I should have had a guard with me like I do when shooting high end jewellery (I hope the security guys who do look after the jewellery I shoot have a nice day when they come to the studio - I try to supply all the food, drink and Netflix they could possibly want!)
This was a lovely challenge - lighting the brush to bring out it's gloss finish and to shoot a 360 of it too. There was lots of wire, tape, silver and black card and far more lights than expected involved in putting the shot together.
